It was a cold winter day but I decided to head over to Knotts Island anyway and try my luck. I'd struck out at Martin Vineyards, closed for the winter with no notice. I was expecting the same when I got to Moonrise.
Instead, I was warmly greated by the owner's daughter, who's name I'll add as soon as I find my notes. A wonderful hostess, she assured me that they were not only open today but stayed open all winter.
We quickly got down to the business of sampling wine and talking about the history of their winery. Pouring was in a blue wine glass that I was allowed to keep. My favorite to this day.
Coastal Moonrise is far enough north that they are able to grow a variety of noble grapes which include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, Norton, Syrah, Chambourcin, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
They haven't forgotten the locals though, with Carlos and Magnolia Muscadines and some delicious all fruit wines that include my favorite, cherry.
Like many of the North Carolina boutiuqe wineries their wines are only available in a small area of North Carolina and Virginia. There's no mistaking the bright blue labels with a centered full moon when you see them.
Located on Knotts Island on the coast and near the Virginia border, it's well worth a trip to stop in and try a few wines. They're guaranteed to make anyone's day great.
